Halloween Pedestrian Safety Tips

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many. It’s a time when everyone – adults and children alike – can dress up, enjoy some candy, and have fun. Of course, doing so means walking the roads. As we all know, busy streets are hectic and sometimes dangerous, especially at night. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Halloween is one of the top days for pedestrian injuries in the nation. You’re four times more likely to be struck by an oncoming car. Here’s how to remain safe this Halloween!

Motorists must drive this holiday season cautiously. When entering a residential neighborhood, obey all traffic signs and slow down. It’s best to drive five miles-per-hour under the posted speed limit to allow extra time to react. Sometimes, despite parents’ best efforts, excited children race across the road.

  • Watch for children on roadways or curbs
  • Look for kids in costumes crossing the street
  • Carefully enter and exit driveways
  • Turn on your headlights

Even slowing down is enough to prevent an accident. Be watchful and consider everyone’s safety, not just your own.

As parents, we like seeing our children have fun. That’s what halloween is all about!

  • Ensure an adult is supervising all children under the age of 12
  • Plan and discuss your trick-or-treat route ahead of time
  • Instruct children to travel in familiar neighborhoods only
  • Establish a time for children to return home
  • Instruct children not to indulge in treats until they return home
  • Make sure costumes are visible and flame-retardant

By following these steps, parent ensures the safety of their own children and motorists on the roadways. We all want to have a fun, safe time this year.
