Walking typically gets you where you’re going in a timely manner, but is also an excellent method of exercise. We all live busy lives, and visiting the gym after work is usually not on the schedule. That’s unfortunate, considering how healthy cardio is for our heart and body. You could easily forego the morning car ride or bus trip by walking to work. However, walking comes with its own risks. You’ll want to remain safe as a pedestrian.
As a pedestrian, you’ll want to use sidewalks always. When available, the sidewalk is the safest place to travel. Should there be no sidewalk, however, always walk facing traffic, but be vigilant. This is common sense for most people, though. A few other worthwhile tips are:
- Stay alert – There are many distracted drivers on the road, so you should be aware of your surroundings and individuals around you at all times.
- Avoid using alcohol or drugs – These items can greatly impair your ability to remain safe while walking along the road.
- Use corners – When crossing the street, use a corner instead of passing in the middle.
Alternatively, if you’re driving to work each morning, you’ll want to be cautious of those walking along the roadways.
- Children – Be aware of any children in the area. They may be impulsive and dart into traffic at random.
- Obey traffic laws – This means you should never speed, perform a U-turn, or pass on the right side of traffic.
- Crosswalks – When driving, approach crosswalks carefully. In most areas, pedestrians have the right of way, and drivers must stop at crosswalks with people in them.
